Real Media Artefact 1 (music promo)

The man who cant be moved- The Script

The man who cant be moved is a narrative based music video where we see Danny (the lead singer) in an urban city sitting on the pavement patiently singing about how he is waiting on a girl to come and meet him. Crowds begin to gather round him and he makes the news, becoming famous. As the music video progresses we see Danny getting older and eventually finding out that the girl never turns up. All of the band members are dressed in casual dark clothing to represent their style of band. As we see Danny sat on the ground he has a cardboard sign, a picture, and nothing else on him. This is how we envision homeless people, therefore the song is conforming to the typical stereotype of a homeless person, this is also true for the surroundings, as the walls have graffiti on them and the area is run down. The lighting is bright to represent daytime which then contrast with the night time to show how time has passed but Danny is still sat on the corner.

The music video begins with a casting shadow on the pavement where it cuts to a close up of Danny’s face to show his facial expression. This sets the mood of the music video as his face is sad and looks lost, therefore as the audience we feel sympathy for him and also feel saddened by this. As Danny begins to walk the shots are short and quick to mirror his motion of walking. The camera is panning around Danny in the direction he moves his head to show his surroundings and to give the idea that he is looking round trying to find the corner to meet the girl. As he is walking down the street it is mainly medium close-ups and close-ups of Danny to show his singing and to promote him as an artist. It then cuts to him and the rest of the band in a parking lot to fit in with the theme of an urban city and to promote the rest of the band. It also does this by doing close ups of each band member playing their instrument. It shows Danny sitting down on the corner with an over the shoulder shot to make the audience feel part of the video as it allows them to see what Danny is seeing. We as the audience can see people gathered around him asking him questions.

At this point the lyrics match what we are visually seeing. For example there are hundreds of people, many of which are news reporters and the words he sings are ‘maybe I will get famous as the man who cant be moved’ as he is being shown on television. Another example is when he repeats the words ‘I’m the man who cant be moved’ we see time speeding up but he is still sat on the corner’. The music also matches the visuals. As Danny is walking down the street he is walking to the beat of the music, the effect of this is it makes the video feel real, as if he is actually there making the video feel personal to the viewer.

The editing for this video is quite basic. Many of the transitions are quick to match the pace of the song, on the other hand the pace of the editing contraditcs the narrative and meaning of the song. This is because the narrative of the song is about the artist waiting for a girl, therefore this is involing time but over a long period whereas the editing is quick and fast pace.

As you can see from my analysis I think that this music video conforms to Godwin's 6 elements of a music video however not all of the 6 element are used. Throughout the song the lyrics match the visuals, the music meets the visuals, it demonstrates genre characteristics as it is pop video with a girl and boy relationship and it includes multiple close-ups of the band to promote them. However it does not include notion of looking and intertextual references.

This music video meets the expectation of pop genre. This is because it has the stereotypical narrative story of the normal pop song. It's a male singing about his love for a girl. The music video also uses lots of close ups of the artist as it is aimed at teenage girls who would find the main male singer ( Danny) attractive. The surroundings and area of the music video are also pop like and would appeal to the age group that listen to pop.

Near the end of the video there is an effect where there is a time lapse with scenes of days passing and we witness Danny in rain and snow, growing older with a larger beard, whistle everything is moving quicker through time. It them goes back to normal where it ends with a close-up on Danny who is still waiting as the girl has yet to come to him. The effect of this is that as the audience we get an insight as to how long Danny is sitting there, making the audience feel sympathy for Danny. It also looks good visually therefore to the audience it will make the video memorable and leaving them wanting to watch the music video again.

Overall the music video is very effective in promoting the artist through the close-ups of him and the rest of the band. I think the video engages the audience throughout keeping them interested.

  1. Chloe, this has a good focus and mentions some key shots and editing in places. In order to help you with your own video you could consider the timing of shots and look at Goodwin's 6 elements of music video and see if it conforms. Maybe consider how far the video meets the expectations of POP genre.
