Digi Pack Inspiration

Front cover:
As part of the planning for my digi pack I decided to look at existing album covers. I felt this would be useful as it would allow me to see what makes them successful and therefore would help me to create and come up with ideas for my own. When looking at these album covers I can see that the majority of them have an image of the artist to promote them and to make the front cover standout and be eye-catching, therefore when constructing mine I shall take into consideration the image that's on the front, When also analysing the images I can see that a lot are close-ups or extreme close-ups, and the way that they are being portrayed as an artist throughout position or pose they are in. On the other hand album covers can not include an image of the artist and can include just a pattern, or an image that is telling a narrative, or an image to promote a song that is featured in the album, therefore I shall ensure when I am constructing draft ideas for my digi pack I shall include both styles of front covers. Also when looking at the  front cover I looked at the text on the cover. Most of the front covers included the artist name and the name of the album. This has allowed me to think about what information I want to include on my own digi pack. With the text I also look at the font styles used. A lot of the font styles are bold and colourful to make them standout and easy to read. A lot of the album covers have bright colours to make them eye-catching and to make them standout, however some are in black and white. Therefore when constructing my album cover I need to consider what will be most suitable for my song. Overall I have found looking at album covers very useful as it has allowed me to see how current music albums look and what makes them work well, allowing me to come up with ideas that will appeal to my target market and do well.

Back cover:
As well as analysing the front covers for existing CD's I decided to analise the back covers. When looking at the different back covers I found that all of them included the track numbers. Therefore when creating my own digi pack I can see that it is an important feature to have. Many of the back covers that included an image of the artist on the front have one on the back. This is to promote and sell them. The image that is on the front is normally an extreme close up where as the image of the artist on the back is usually a long shot or a medium shot. This is to show and promote the artist in different ways, also making the digi pack more interesting through the use of variation. Some of the album covers include a pattern which is then carried on to the back page. This is to link both pages together. The text on the back cover is easy and clear to read. It also been put in a specific font colour to make it standout from the background colour. Another feature that is on the back cover is the name of the album which is repeated on both covers. It is written in the exact same style to link both pages together, and to make it memorable and standout to the audience. The back cover and the front cover link together through the use of the background colour. A lot of them use bright colours to make them standout and be eye-catching. Also by having a bright bold colour it will make the CD cover standout against other products when being sold on the shelf, for example shops such as HMV. Overall I have found it useful analysing the back cover as it has allowed me to see what features they include to make them successful and how both pages complement each other making the tow pages link together.

CD design:
I felt it would be useful to look at the CD that is inside of the digi pack. Many of the CD's are the same design as the front and back cover. All of the CD's that I have analysed included the name of the album in the same way it is written on the front and back cover. This has been done for various reasons, for example it links all three parts together making the digi pack become one. Also by printing the name of the album in the same way it makes it both memorable and recognisable for the audience. A few of the CD's include an image of the artist which are included on the front and back cover. Like the back cover the images are long shots or medium shots to show variation of the artist. An image is also used to promote and sell the artist. The CD includes the same style of background that is used for the front and back cover. This is to link them together and so that the audiance associate them all together. Overall I have found that looking at the CD designs very useful as it has allowed be to se how it links in with the rest of the digi pack. Finally it has allowed me to see the types of features that are included to make exsiting prodcuts work.

Filming Schedule

As you can see I have filled out this calendar which shows the schedule for my filming, when I will be uploading, editing and creating my ancillary task, (the digi pack and advert). I felt this would be useful as it has allowed me to be organised for the construction stage of this project. I shall try and keep as close to the schedule as much as I can, however I shall evaluate whether I succeed this when constructing the music promo and creating my ancillary task.

MES choices/ideas

Once I had looked at images for inspiration I was able to make decisions for the mise en scene for my music video. It has allowed me to see and think of suitable locations for parts of my video.

Woods 1- I have decided to shoot the first part of my music video in the woods. I think this will be a good place to have it as it will fit with the rest of the surroundings and locations for the rest of the music video, as they will also be outside. When recording this part of the music video I will have to ensure that there is no sun as this shot will involve them agreeing, therefore a dull light will be more appropriate and will help to set the mood of the music video.

Graffiti wall- Another scene for my music video, the main one, is to have the singer up against a graffiti wall. I think this is a good backdrop for the singer as it will create an interesting setting and will work well with the narrative I am telling throughout the video. It also matches the setting in the woods at is outside. Again when recording I shall ensure that there is little sunlight to create a dull effect. This is to help set the mood of the song and to go with the narrative.

woods 2- I will also be shooting in the woods again, however in a different area to tell the two different shots apart, to go with the narrative. These woods are for the flash back of the couple playing hide and seek. I think the woods will be an interesting surrounding and will help with the 'hide and seek' concept as they can be hiding behind trees. Also by having this scene outside it links in with the other two settings making the music video  and the narrative flow. Unlike the other two settings this one will include light, therefore when recording I will ensure there is sunlight. The reason for having light is to bring across to the audience the positive happy atmosphere to contrast with the other two scenes which are more depressing and sad. It is important that the lighting is natural so that it goes with the surroundings of being outside.

These are images that I have researched and that have given me inspiration for the location for each setting in my music video:

Location

As part of my planning I decided it would be useful to think about the location of my music video, the props involved and more. This information has been presented on Prezi. I found using prezi for this piece of work very useful has it has allowed me to clearly show my ideas and my thought process for the music video.

Video Timings- Story board

For my planning I decided to look closley at the timings of the song. I have analysied the timings on the lyrics and now I have decided to construct a video to show the timings for my video. This will allow me to see how the video fits with the lyrics and the visuals. I found this a useful exersise as it has allowed by to get a good idea of the timings.

Storyboard

Timing With Lyrics

Once I had looked at the lyrics and thought about the visuals for the music video, I felt the next useful step would be to write down the timings for each of these.

As you can see I have highlighted each of the lyrics which involve an action and have written down the starting time of the first word. For example the lyrics 'After my blood turns to alcohol' starts at 1.25 seconds. I felt this would be useful as it would allow me to see exactly when the action would have to start in order for it to fit in time with the lyrics.

Both the visuals with the lyrics and the timings with the lyrics has allowed me to be able to see exactly  how my music video is going to look. Therefore me next step is to create a storyboard to piece all of this information together.

Ideas With Lyrics

As part of my planning I decided it would be a good idea to look at the lyrics of my chosen song choice, as it would allow me to create ideas for  matching the lyrics which the visuals in the music video, as this is one of Godwin's 6 elements to a music video. Here is my analysis of the lyrics to 'Give me love' by Ed Sherran.

As you can see I have highlighted each lyric of the song and next to it explained what I intent to do in the music video so that the visuals match the lyrics. The annotations include the type of shot it will be and what it includes for example, zooms into the girls face, smiling and happy, followed by an extreme close up of the girls lips, The lyrics that are highlighted with this analysis is, 'All I want is the taste that your lips allow.'  Overall I have found this very useful as it has allowed me to explore different ideas and to get a good understanding of what i want the music video to look and be like.

Song Request

Once I had chosen my song the next step was to contact the record label that the artist is with. Here is the email that I sent. Unfortunately I didn't get a response to my email, however I will still be going ahead and using the song Give me love by Ed Sherran.

Possible Song Choices

Once I had completed my research I knew from my target audience that the genre of music I would base my music video would be on pop. I also found out that the video would be suitable for both male and females, and that it had to be suitable and appropriate for the age range of 15-20. Since I had collect this data I researched into songs that would fit into all of these categories in oder for my music video to suit my target market. Here is a list of songs that I thought could be possible choices.

1) The A team- Birdy
2) If I were a boy- Beyonce
3) One love- Blue
4) Take a bow- Rihanna
5) With you- Chris Brown
6) TikTok- Kesha
7) Big girls don't cry- Fergie
8) If you wanna- The vaccines
9) Give me love acoustic- Ed Sheeran
10) Let me love you- Mario
11) Toy solider- Eminem
12) Chasing pavements- Adel
13) Mouthwash- Kate Nash
14) Where is the love- Black eyed peas
15) So sick- Ne Yo

Once I had looked at all of these songs, I thought about each one and decided which one I felt was best for creating my own music video. I have chosen Give me love by Ed Sheeran. I chose this song because I feel I will be able to create an interesting music video with creating the visuals to match the lyrics, also when listening to the song I could  visualise different narratives, different settings and people that I could include I the song. This song will also appeal to both genders and for the age group of 15-20.

Product Placement

Nowhere days there are so many different ways of accessing music and music videos. Ways such as; the internet, TV, radio and in stores ect. Therefore it is critical I know exactly where to place my product. I would firstly allow my audience to access the music video online. This could be through the use of the artists own website where new releases are put up on a regular basis before they are put up virally on websites such as YouTube and on music channels. This website could also allow fans to be able to comment, write their reviews and give their feedback on the videos. Another way to promote my artist and the music video is via social networking sites such as Facebook and Twitter. These websites are used by millions of users worldwide therefore the music video can reach a wide audience. Using social networking sites has help many other artists to make their music go viral for example Lilly Allen. Another way for my audience to watch the music video would be to publish it on websites such as Youtube and Vevo. These websites will provide a good marketing tool for the artist as the internet is such a powerful source as millions of people use it everyday, therefore this will ensure my artist is constantly being promoted and in the pubic eye.

I created a questionnaire to find out information that would help me with the research for my music video. I found out that the genre for my music video is pop and is aimed at both genders ages 15-20. Therefore from this research I looked into music channels that would be appropriate to play my music video on. I think a good channel would be kiss as this channel plays mostly pop music, therefore appealing to my target market. Another element I thought about was the time my music video would be played. I felt that there would be no specific time for it to be played but in the evenings would be most suitable because that is when my target market is most likely to be able to watch the videos. Another way for my target audience to accesses music videos would be to listen to them on the radio. As well as thinking about playing them on the radio I also encountered what radio stations would be most suitable for the genre and style of music. Therefore i think radio stations such as Radio 1, Capital and kiss would be appropriate. This will also help to promote the artist as it will reach a wide audience who may not watch music channels or use the internet to access music videos that often.

As well as thinking about where to place my music video i have also thought about where I need to place my digipack. Much like the music video there are many ways to access it. I would firstly place my digipack on the artists website so that my audience can see what it looks like and to be able to pre-order it. I would also sell the album in the specialist music shops such as HMV. I will also place it in supermarkets such as Tesco, Waitrose, Sainsbury’s and Asda. As I think it is important to sell it in supermarkets aswell as specialist shops as they are getting less popular with the increase of downloading music online. Another place my audience could access my digipack would be for them to purchase it online from website such as Amazon and Ebay or to buy it on ITunes.

Finally I have looked at where I would place my poster for advertising the new realise of the album that includes the track of my music video. I think the best place would be in music magazines. This is because it will allow my target audience to access it easily. Many people buy music magazines therefore it is a great way to promote the artist and their album. After deciding music magazines were a good place to advertise the poster I then thought about what would be the best music magazine. I came up with Q magazine as this magazine can include pop genre artist, and is suited for both genders and for the ages of 15-20, therefore appealing to my target audience.

Miss D

Lots of work here Chloe- Well done. When you are anlysing the real media artefacts for the digipaks look at layout and the types of shots used for the images. It may be a good idea to look at the amrk scheme for the Print construction and the skills mentioned; if you anlyse these things then the success criteria is in your mind too!

Real Media Artefact 3 (digipack and advert)

Front cover
The main image on this front cover is Taylor Swift. The image is large and takes up most of the surrounding area. The reason for having such a large dominating image is to prompt and sell the artist. The camera shot used here is a medium close-up as this allows us to see a vast amount of Taylor Swift. Our tension is drawn straight to her hair as its blown out and therefore is big, taking up a lot of the image. The reason for creating this pose/look is to appeal to her target audience which may be young teenage girls. Taylor Swift is written in a scrip font, this makes it seem feminine and pretty, again appealing to her target audience. Fearless, the name of the album, is in a decretive font to make it stand out and be bold. The colours on this front cover are neutral colours to match what Taylor Swift is wearing bring in the whole image as one. Overall i think this front cover is good as it promote her as an artist well and is suited to her audience however i think it should include more colours to make it standout and be more eye-catching.

CD design
The CD design is ver similar to the design of the front cover. This works well as it links both of them together creating the flow of the digipack. The colours that have been used are the same. These colours are neutral colours and also natural. As well as the colours being used to match what Taylor Swift is wearing it could be to represent Taylor Swifts natural beauty and her natural talent in playing music, which could be meaningful to her target audience. The colours start off darker at the bottom and gradually get lighter towards the top of the CD, i think effect has been created to make it a more interesting design rather than just one block colour. The writing is also the same on the CD design as it is on the front cover to link them both together.

Inside cover
The inside cover is also similar to the front cover as the main focus is Taylor Swift through the use of images. Again this is used to promote and sell her as an artist. The images are very fun and happy to sell Taylor Swift as a happy and joyful person which will appeal to her target market of teenage girls. Many of the images are medium close-ups or long distances shots  to allow as to see that she is dressed in dress showing her femininity and relating to her target audience. Taylor Swift is also wearing white which could symbolise peace and purity also appealing to her target audience. The Colours of the background are the same as the colours used on the front cover and the CD design to link them all together, however on this page the background has bubble like symbols to match the images, which are showing her having fun and they could also have been used to represent/show Taylor Swifts personality as being 'bubbly'.

Back cover
The back cover of the CD digipack holds a lot on it. At the top of the page it has the artist name, Taylor Swift, in the same writing as it appears on the front cover and CD design. This helps to link all the parts together. This is also true as the same colours are used throughout. Other text that is written on the page is the track number for each song. This writing is very similar and is written in a script font to create a feminine and graceful look. The image is to the right of the writing where again it is a picture of Taylor Swift to promote her as an artist. The image that we can see on the back cover is a medium shot of Taylor Swift so that we can see she looks very elegant and is dressed simerly to the previous pictures in the inside cover, to keep the flow of the digipack and to promote her as being a 'girlie girl' and targeting an audience of teenage/ younger girls. Which is also shown through the way she is dressed to look like a princess.

Advert 3

When researching into magazine adverts for the release of Taylor Swifts album, fearless, i was unsuccessful as i couldn't find any. On the other hand i did find a poster that is promoting Taylor Swifts tour for the album fearless. The background colour to this poster is black. This makes the poster standout and makes it eye-catching. The main focus of this poster are the two images of Taylor Swift. These images have been used to promote and to sell her as an artist. One of the images is a medium close up so that we can clearly see her and the second image is a long shot to show us what Taylor Swift is wearing, as her target audience is young teenage girls, therefore they will be interested in her appearance. This is also true for the digipack as it included a lot of images of Taylor Swift. Linking them both together. They're also linked through the text. The writing of her name is in the same font style, size and colour that is used throughout the whole of the digipack. This font style is script as it creates a feminine and graceful look, representing Taylor Swift. The word 'fearless' is also written at the top of the poster in the same format as it is on the front cover of the CD, however on the poster it is in a neutral colour and the writing underneath is in black to allow them both to standout on the black background. Overall i think this is a good poster as the use of the dark black background makes the poster eye-catching and standout. The use of the images are good as they also make the poster interesting and promote Taylor Swift as an artist. Finally i think it is clever how certain elements from each one all link them together, for example the fonts.

Real Media Artefact 2 (digipack and advert)

Front cover
The main colour to this front cover is yellow. By having such a bright colour like yellow it immediately makes it standout and makes it eye-catching. The yellow background has a 'scratched' and 'worn' effect making it feel retro. Both the rocket and the silhouette of Bruno Mars are in black, therefore they standout from the background making the whole cover become eye-catching.  In the centre of the front cover is a vapour trail from the rocket in the distance which is mirrored through the lettering on Bruno Mars as it as the same curves. Overall i like this front cover and think it is very successful at making it eye-catching and different from existing products.

CD design
The CD design is almost the opposite to the front cover in terms of the colour scheme. The background colour to the CD design is black and the silhouette of Bruno Mars is yellow, whereas on the front cover the main background colour is yellow and Bruno Mars in black. I think swapping round the colours is a good idea as it makes it more interesting but still links the whole digipack together. I think the black and yellow contrast well together making the disc standout on its own and when in the case.
Inside cover
The inside cover to this CD digipack goes well with the CD design and the front cover. It has used the same colour scheme of black and yellow to link them all together and to make the inside cover eye-catching. The main focus in this picture is of Bruno Mars as it is large close-up shot and takes up the whole area. The reason for using such a large images it to make the page look interesting and to promote Bruno Mars as an artist. In the background however you can see the same path of vapour trail from the rocket that is on the front page, again linking them both together. Like the background the image has a slight texture to it to create a retro feel to the CD.

Back cover
The back cover is very simple and basic, but is effective. The background colour is the same as it is for the front cover, a yellow/orange. I think as well as this colour is being used to make the CD standout and be colourful I think it could also represent the sun. Also because the shape on the back to hold all the track numbers of each song is in the shape of the circle/sun and on the front cover is a rocket shape which are associated with sky/space and there is a shadow cast by the silhouette of Bruno Mars.

Advert 2

When i researched into magazine advertisement for the release of Bruno Mars new album, doo-wops and hooligans i couldn't find any, however i did find a poster advertising his tour for this album. As you can see the poster is spilt into two parts, an image and then information. The main image used on this poster is the same image that is used on the insert cover of the CD digipack. This is to link the two items together and to allow the audience to recognise this and therefore be familiar with the two. The image includes a large size picture of Bruno Mars. This is to advertise and to promote him as an artist, ask by including a large image it makes the poster interesting and standout. In the background you can see the same path of vapour trail from the rocket that is on the front page, again linking them both together. The writing saying Bruno Mars is in the same font style as it appears on the digipack. This font style is decretive, in a large font size and in white.  By having the font in a decorative style makes it seem fun and exciting through the use of the curves and the angle of the writing , this could be to symbols the type and style of music by Bruno Mars. By having the front in a large size it makes it standout and and easy to read, which is also true for the colour as the white stands out from the yellow background. The background is yellow to link both the digipack and the poster together, however it is also used as it is bright and therefore makes the poster eye-catching. The colour yellow is normally associated with the sun and being a warming colour therefore as we see the poster it makes the viewer seem happy and cheerful, therefore this could encourage people to listen or to buy Bruno Mars music. As well as the image there is plenty of information. The information is written in black writing to allow it to standout from the yellow background also making it easier and clear to read. Overall i think this is a good poster as it has clearly been linked to the CD digipack. The use of the right yellow makes the poster standout, it holds a lot of information but it written briefly so doesn't involve a lot of reading and the main image of Bruno Mars makes the poster standout and promotes him well as an artist.

Real Media Artefact 1 (digipack and advert)

Front cover
The front cover for this album is quite unusual, however i think thats what makes it interesting and standout. The main background colour is blue to represent the sky. Also by using the blue it makes it standout and therefore become eye-catching. In the foreground are the tops of housing and rising above them is a hand presenting two people, however the male has no head. Instead of a head is a rainbow of colours, this makes the front cover standout and could represent the idea of a rainbow.  The whole image  is in colour but the hand in the middle is in black and white, this draws in our attention and. All of the image is in 3D to make it standout and look realistic however the name of the album "the script" is in 2D form. The writing is written in white to standout against the blue background. Behind the writing is the shadow of each letter written in a different shade of blue, this makes the writing standout and look more interesting. Overall i like this album cover and think it is very effective.

CD design
The CD design is very basic and not very interesting, contrasting with the appearance of the front cover. However they still have links. The CD is jet black to match the black and white hand on the front cover. By also having the CD black it makes it standout is bold. The writing for the album name is also printed on the CD. It is written in the same font style, colour and size. I think this is a good design as it is simple and basic but effective.
Inside cover
The background of this inside cover has elements of both the cover and the CD design to link the whole digipack together. The background is jet black, like the CD design. By having the background black it standouts making it interesting and eye-catching. On the front cover a rainbow style design is coming out of the mans head and follows of to the end of the page which is then carried on through to this page. This like both of them together. Also by having the rainbow style design on this page it makes it more colourful and it standout from the black background making the page, bold and eye-catching.

Back cover
The back cover is every different to the other three items i have analysed in the digipack. The background is off white to make the text standout and contrast to the other pages in the digipack. The writing is in a simple and clear font to make it easy to read. The writing of the same of the album is writing in the same way as it is on the CD design and the front cover, however is written in black rather than white to allow it to standout again the background. By them all being the same font it links them all together.

Advert 1

When I was researching into magazine adverts for the advertisement off the realised album 'the script' I had no luck in finding one. However I did look at other types of promotions to analyse, for example this poster. This is a poster to promote the scripts up coming tour. This poster standouts, is eye-catching and draws in our attention. In the centre of the poster is a large image of the lead singer, Danny O'donoghue, this is to promote him as an artist, and to fill the surrounding space. The rest of the band members are underneath Danny playing their guitars, again to promote them as a band and to make the poster eye-catching. The Background colour is black. This makes the poster bold and standout, making it easy to see. Also by having the darker background it makes other elements, for example the band, standout and become more clear. The name of the band 'the script' is in large lettering across the top of the page. The lettering is black, however it stands out from the background as each letter is outlined with yellow. This yellow is to match a design to the side of it. Linking the whole poster together. The font is quite thick and is in a decretive font. This makes it clear and easy to read. This text is in the same font style that is used on the front cover of the CD digipack. This therefore links the two together and making the brand name memorable be the repetition of the same font. This is also true as the inside case and the CD are black to match the colour of the background to this poster. At the bottom of the page there is more text, in two different styles. The word 'homecoming' is in a decrotive large font and is outlined in red to bring out the red in other parts of the poster. Underneath this is small text which is written in white. This is to make it standout against the black, showing it is an important and useful piece of information. Overall I think this is an effective poster as it stands out through the use of images, colours and different style of fonts. It also does well at promoting the band and being direct.

Mrs D

Your RMA analysis are good and detailed. Well done. Don't forget about editing - look at how it drives the pace of the song. This is very improtant for music promos.

Digipack/ Advertisement Questionnaire Analysis

1) For this question I asked the question ‘what is your gender?’ I felt this was a necessary question to ask as I felt that the gender may affect the outcome of other questions.  My results from this question are that there was an equal amount of females and males.  Therefore I will not make my music digipack to suit a certain gender I shall make it so that it will appeal to both.
2) I asked an age related question as I felt this would affect the rest of the questions, therefore I felt it would be a good question to put forward and ask the audience. From my results I can see the most popular age group was 15-20. Therefore I shall relate my music video to this age group.

3) This question involved asking my target audience whether or not they buy CD's. Everyone one who filled out the questionnaire answered yes. Therefore i can see that it is important to design a good and effective digipack.
4) I asked 'what would you expect to see in a CD digipack?'. The options, lyrics, pictures of the artist/band and numbers to tracks on the CD all received high scores and were most popular shortly followed by messages/acknowledgments from the artist/band. Therefore i can see that i will include a lot of these features in my CD digipack. I felt that this was an important question to ask as I now know what my target audience will like, making my CD digi pack successful and appealing.
5) I asked a simple question asking them whether they felt the album cover is an important part of the CD. Everyone who took part in this questionnaire said yes. I felt this was an important question as it would allow me to see how important it is to my target audience.
6) Another question regarding the CD digi pack was whether they believe the album cover should portray the artist style. They all answered yes. Therefore i can now see that i will have to make sure both my music video and CD digi pack work well and complement each other.
7) This was my final specific question on CD covers. It asked what they think should be included on the front cover of a CD. The 2 most popular options were; images of the artist/band and the name of the album. The second most popular option was a rating of the album. I felt it was important to ask this question as it would allow me to see exactly what my target audience want in a CD digi pack.
8) My next question involved CD magazine adverts and this question asked whether they influence them. All 10 people who answered this questionnaire said yes. Therefore i can see that it is important to create a CD magazine advert as well as creating the music video and CD digi pack.
9) This question regarded my target audience saying what they would expect to see on a CD magazine advert. The most popular options were images of the artist/band and name of the album. shortly followed by a rating of the album. This was an important question to ask as it has allowed me to see what i need to include in order for this to be a success.
10) Question 10 was asking what they think makes a CD magazine advert successful. The top 4 most popular choices were, bright colours, different se of fonts, clear and easy to read text and imagery. Shortly followed by new about the artist and information in the music. This was a good question to ask as it has given me ideas on what to include in my CD music magazine advert.
11) This was my final specific question on music magazine adverts. It asked if they thought they would be more successful if it includes at lot of information (text) it carry's less information ( mainly images).
